An Exciting Opportunity!
It’s not too early to start thinking about next year’s ASCLS National Convention in Chicago, Illinois. The dates are July 21-25, 2009. Each year a delegation from Idaho attends this convention. According to our Standard Operating Procedures, the size of the Society delegation is to be based on the number of professional and emeritus members as so provided in the Bylaws of ASCLS. This means the current President (Heather Gunter) and the current President Elect (Mary Lay) represent Idaho in the House of Delegates. The first additional delegate is the newly elected President Elect chosen at the 2009 annual business meeting during Nominations and Elections process. Additional candidates are nominated from the floor however, this year they may also be written in on the nominations and elections form which will be sent to every member prior to the elections. Perhaps you would like to be a member of the 2009 delegation! Are you asking yourself, what are the expectations of someone who goes to the convention? Our Board has recently defined the responsibilities of each delegate:
The delegate in accepting the nomination to represent Idaho at the ASCLS National convention, acknowledges that he/she is required to attend governance sessions, be present at and support all delegate functions as assigned by the ASCLS-Idaho President, bring pertinent information back to the state membership and submit an article for the ASCLS-Idaho fall newsletter.
I have been to two conventions at the National level. The week is a busy one from morning to night. It’s such a fabulous experience: opportunities for continuing education, chances to expand knowledge of how the society functions, times to express your opinion on matters important to you, and moments to make new friends and cement growing friendships. I have left feeling very confident that the work our society does is important to the future of our profession. I invite you to think seriously about adding your name to the candidates to be voted upon. You will come home inspired and even prouder of your chosen profession.
See you in Chicago!
Mary Lay
