Red, White and Blue and Science Too- The ASCLS Experience
The Annual Meeting for ASCLS was held this year in Washington, DC. It was an incredible experience with a busy schedule.
Two main points from our meetings stood out. First was the celebration of the recent defeat of the Medicare Competitive Bidding Project for Laboratory Services. At the convention, our efforts were recapped from the Capitol Hill visits to members who contacted Congress urging support of the initial bill. Everyone’s persistency was acknowledged and one could feel the elation throughout the week. It was empowering, looking back at what our combined efforts accomplished. Secondly, we recognized the accomplishments of the first graduating class for Leadership Academy. These dynamic Clinical Laboratory Scientists set and met several goals during their year. What impressed me most was the video they made promoting our profession. It was presented during the President Elect Seminar. It was a first rate video depicting them at work in the laboratory, attending the Legislative Symposium, and enjoying themselves in social settings.
I was able to attend eight workshops from Point of Care to Chemistry to Regulations. This is an important opportunity for all delegates to gather cutting edge information and bring it back to our laboratories. I especially found the following workshops valuable: Low Level Troponin Testing, Accreditation Surveys, and Clinicians’ Perspective on Waived Testing. Such pertinent knowledge not only helps one to become a better CLS, but also helps us to provide better patient care.
