In 2003, Congress directed the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) to conduct a demonstration project on the competitive acquisition of Laboratory Services. This Congressional mandate came as a result of Section 302(b) of the Medicare Prescription Drug Act. The purpose of the demonstration is to determine whether competitive bidding can be used to provide quality clinical laboratory services at a price below current Medicare reimbursement rates.
A Competitive Bidding Demonstration Project has been set for the greater San Diego area:
