With expanding medical knowledge and technological developments, the need for qualified individuals to perform the testing has increased dramatically. Transplants and heart surgeries which were special procedures in the past have become common today. Presurgical testing, monitoring, and follow-up for these procedures is required. New and different pathogens such as AIDS, Lyme disease, hepatitis C, and resurgence of tuberculosis have increased laboratory testing. A stronger emphasis on preventative medicine involves laboratory testing.

  • More than 10 billion laboratory tests are performed in the USA each year
  • More than 265,000 medical laboratory personal are employed in the USA
 

Idaho Society of The American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS-Idaho) shares the mission and vision statement of the national organization which is to serve as the voice of all clinical laboratory professionals, creating a vision for the advancement of the clinical laboratory practice field, and advocating the value and the role of the profession ensuring safe, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient centered health care.
